Assa is a very ancient city in the south of Morocco, which is known through its annual moussem ‘Almogar”. This Moussem is a religious celebration of a very noticeable event within the Islamic history.it is an opportunity for socio-economic actors and the local population to highlight the cultural, artistic and economic potential of the region. It is, also, characterized by its regional character and associates the birth of the Prophet, Mohammed, Peace Be upon Him, to honor the saint of the local tribes. Assa’s moussem has been an event to reunite and consolidate the ties between tribes from different regions of the Moroccan Kingdom. Here, it presents itself as an expression of local life in its daily activities and contributes to the enrichment of the regional and national cultural heritage. Likewise, it is perceived as a very great cultural event by the inhabitants of this part of the Kingdom. Moreover, the preparations can be spread over the whole year. This moussem highlights local traditions, as well as the types of traditional trade. And never can we imagine the Moussem of Assa without races of dromedaries which constitute an important part of our culture.As it is a religious meeting and celebration, this event also has a commercial vocation, since some profit to sell and exchange commodities and other products.It is an occasion to exhibit different local products: Agricultural products such as henna and dates, besides traditional clothes, silver, leather products and, jewelry.
As the visitors can observe,Assa’s moussem is also a good opportunity for some local associations,like Ksar Assa Association ,Tamynout Association…. to organize the ceremony of Circumcision .Additionally,the other local associations including the ones which are mentioned above organize numerous competitions including those of sports, arts and culture. Initiated by the city population of Assa-Zag, in collaboration with the provincial council of the city and representatives of civil society, this major event organized is that of the traditional music: Ahwash, Lgadra and also reciting the Holy Coran in Zawia. In addition, the moussem of Assa traces the whole history of the region and relates, through artisan creations, a part of the social life of the inhabitants of the Moroccan Sahara. This region is full of wonders, beautiful oases and landscapes that do not exist anywhere else and deserve special national and international attention. And thanks to its moussem, the city has become a genuine gathering of thousands of nomads from different tribes of the Moroccan Sahara who come to share their emotions, diversities and cultural richness.
The closing ceremony of the moussem of the region was marked by the declamation of verses of the Holy Qur'an and panegyrics of the Prophet Mohammed, prayer and peace Be upon Him.
The civilization heritage and Moroccan-African spiritual ties in the service of the national cause and local development, is the theme of the religious Moussem of Assa, which lasts approximately one week full of activities which deserve the pilgrimage of different visitors to this area.
This spiritual rendezvous will make Assa the preferred destination of the tribes of southern Morocco, and will offer the opportunity to promote local assets through the organization of cultural, economic, social, sports and commercial activities.Visitors as well as inhabitants of Assa, will mark the cultural activities, symposiums and poetry evenings, in addition to traditional riding events, dromedary races and agricultural exhibitions.
This annual Moussem has become an unavoidable annual rendezvous and an occasion to contribute to the economic and social development of the city and to the promotion of the historical and natural potentialities of the Ksar Assa and of the whole city of Assa as well.
